Dress Code for Dance Classes

See Studio Store for where to purchase shoes and dancewear in the area.

You may bring a bottle of plain water into class. No sports drinks, juice or soda. No food.

Ballet- Youth and Teens (ages 8-17) must wear a black leotard (any style), pink tights, and pink ballet shoes. Girls must have their hair in a bun. No warm-ups! You are permitted a close fitting dance sweater in winter months. Men and boys must wear a white tee shirt, black men's leggings or very close fitting black jazz pants with black ballet slippers. Children (ages 3-7) may wear any color leotard and tights or appropriate dance/exercise wear with pink ballet shoes. Beware! Some discount stores sell bedroom slippers decorated to look like ballet slippers displayed next to leotards and tights in their children's clothing dept. They are never acceptable for class. Do not purchase them for class. They usually have a cloth or slinky faux satin upper. They are too slippery and are not permitted in dance class.

Any other class may wear any color leotard and tights or close fitting dance/exercise wear with appropriate shoes. Pajamas are not appropriate. Street clothing is not appropriate. You may be stretching. You will want to preserve your modesty. The soles of shoes must be clean and dry. Do not wear your dance shoes outside.

Modern Dance is traditionally done bare footed. Many manufacturers now make foot gear for modern dance: foot thongs, foot undeez, dance paws, dance mittens, etc. You may, but are not required to use such foot gear for modern dance classes. You will need footless or convertible tights.

Combination Ballet/Modern classes should wear convertible or footless tights. Ballet shoes are preferred, but not required for the first part of class. Any color tights and leotard or close fitting dance/exercise wear.

Jazz classes should wear tan color (Capezio caramel), bootie style jazz slippers. If you already own black jazz shoes, you may wear them for class, however when you need to purchase a new pair, you are asked to obtain the tan. Boys black.

Hip Hop classes should wear black hip hop sneakers.  Many manufacturers make hip hop sneakers specifically for dance.

Child Youth & Teen Jazz/Hip Hop classes should wear tan color (Capezio caramel), bootie style jazz slippers. Boys black.

Adults (18+) Jazz/Hip Hop classes may wear any clean, dry athletic shoe with a non-marking sole for class. Inexpensive sneakers leave black marks on the floor. A decent athletic shoe will say that its non-marking. The soles must be clean and dry. We ask that you dedicate a pair of sneakers to class and not wear them outside where they may pick up dirt and grime. You may also wear either jazz shoes or hip hop shoes for class. Hip Hop shoes provide more cushion for the foot to absorb the impact of hopping motions. Once a performance piece is selected, you may be asked to acquire shoes (tan jazz or black hip hop) which suit the piece for performance.

Tap - black tap shoes. U-shell (tie style) is preferred for children under age 8. Oxford style is preferred for Youth, Teens and Adults.
